'Jai Ho' won't work for Congress: Amar

The Oscar-winning song 'Jai ho' can be music to ears but "cannot win votes", feels Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh.

He was responding to queries on Congress' decision to use the song in the rag to riches film "Slumdog Millionaire" for campaigning.

"Be it Jai Ho or India Shining, nobody wins or loses through slogans. Only leadership qualities and politicians' personality help them win elections. Slogans can be music to ears but cannot win votes " the SP general secretary said in New Delhi.

Congress has decided to use the Oscar-winning song, penned by lyricist Gulzar, in its poll campaign to drive home the message that its regime has been "a saga of hope for the common man".

The comments came after the Samajwadi Party said its alliance with Congress was "broken" after the latter announced the list of 24 candidates in Uttar Pradesh.

After days of talks on seat sharing, Singh suggested that there was no meeting ground as the Samajwadi Party was ready to give a maximum of 17 seats while the Congress had been demanding a minimum of 25 of the total 80 seats in the politically crucial state.
