Latin community prefers Hibi Eden at Ernakulam

Kochi: The Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council, (KRLCC) has written to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, to consider Hibi Eden, National President of the National Students Union of India, as candidate from the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency.

In a letter written to Gandhi, Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil, who is the President of the KRLCC, said that the constituency has a long tradition of electing members belonging to the Latin Catholic community.

The Latin Archdioceses of Verapoly, the Latin dioceses of Cochin, Kottupuram and Alapuzha are the four prominent dioceses coming under the areas covered in the constituency and the community under the four dioceses constitutes over six lakh people, the letter stated.

Names of advocate Lali Vincent, AICC member and KPCC Executive committee member and Edward Edezath, who lost in the 2004 parliament election from the constituency also find a place in the list, suggested by Acharuparambil, which consists of four names.

In Kerala, the Latin Catholic community has a population of more than 20 lakh people spread over the coastal as well as island regions ,Acharuparambil, who is also the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council President, said.

There is no mention of the names of former ministers K.V. Thomas and Dominic Presentation, who are from the community, in the list
